Biography:

Timo Hytönen is working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Viikki Plant Science Centre, University of Helsinki and as a Principal Research Scientist at the Genetics, Genomics & Breeding Department at NIAB. To identify genetic drivers of climate adaptation, his group is leading a large-scale population genomic and quantitative genetics program that is based on a fully sequenced collection of over 200 woodland strawberry accessions and two sequenced QTL mapping populations. Another research line focuses on gene functions. The group has identified and functionally characterized several important genes mediating environmental regulation of flowering time and stolon formation in strawberries. Current molecular research covers the control of reproductive development more broadly including also the control of inflorescence and berry development in woodland strawberry.
