On Nov. 18, 2021 Prof. Ton Bisseling from Cluster of Plant Development Biology was appointed as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). It is one of the greatest honors in China to acknowledge people’s academic achievement and educational contribution.
Research of Bisseling has focused on beneficial plant-microbe interaction. It started in 1975 with research on the rhizobium legume N fixing root nodule symbiosis and was later extended to the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis and the role of the root associated microbiomes in conferring salt tolerance to its host. In 2017 his research was initiated on the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis in a collaborative project with Beijing University of Agriculture. In the same year research a collaborative project was started with Inner Mongolia Agricultural University on the role of root associated microbiomes in the grasslands of inner Mongolia.
