STARGATE WORKSHOP

An Introduction to Metabolomics

Date: 6-8 December 2021
Venue: Wageningen Campus, Wageningen,
Target Group: max. 25 young researchers (PhD candidates or postdocs)
Fees: The workshop, including lunch, is provided free of charge but the participants will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. Advice will be given on the best accommodation options
Registration: via this website
Registration deadline: 29.10.2021

Participants for this workshop will be selected on the basis of a short motivation letter (1/2 A4) in which you will have to explain how you intend to use this workshop in your (future) research. Applicants should provide the following information: 1) first and last name, 2) your affiliation, 3) whether you are a PhD candidate or postdoc, 4) your motivation letter (1/2 A4). The deadline for applying is 29.10.2021. The selection of participants will be made know at the latest on 12.11.2021.

Each participant must bring their own laptop. Participants much commit to the whole workshop to be eligible to join.

Lecturers: Ric de Vos, Roland Mumm, Jos Hageman, Ron Wehrens, Jasper Engel, Justin van der Hooft & Robert Hall

Guest lecturers: (to be confirmed)

Basic set-up:
This 2.5 day introductory workshop is aimed at young scientists who have limited or no background in metabolomics but who plan to either begin metabolomics research within their current project or will be receiving metabolomics data from other groups for analysis. We shall introduce the concept of how to apply metabolomics approaches to plant-based research including:

  • Basic experimental design,
  • The technologies for data generation (LC/GC MS and NMR);
  • Data management and (pre)processing;
  • Data mining approaches and statistically-sound data interpretation.

The workshop shall comprise lectures, and in silico exercises and group discussions. No lab-work is included but a tour of the local metabolomics facilities shall be arranged.

Day 1 shall focus on the more practical aspects and Day 2 shall be devoted to all aspects of data handling. There will be lectures during the mornings, while the afternoons will be spent on interactive group learning to solve case studies (first day) and web-based data analysis (second day). In the morning of Day 3 any remaining issues will be covered along with a final group discussion and conclusions before departure. We shall also organise a tour of Wageningen Campus for the participants. At the start of each morning / afternoon session we shall also have an online lecture from key international metabolomics experts from the STARGATE project partners on their own fields of activity and application.

After the workshop you will have a basic understanding of the requirements and challenges, as well as the application potentials of metabolomics research.
