PhD Course 'Proteomics'

Advanced PhD Course Proteomics (hands-on)

20-23 October 2008, Wageningen University, Wageningen, The Netherlands

Organized by The Graduate Schools VLAG and EPS, and Department of Biochemistry, Wageningen University

Course description:
The course is a 4 days hands-on course with a maximum of 16 participants (PhD's and postdocs are the target group). In the morning sessions lectures on mass spectrometry and proteomics applications and in the afternoon sessions practical work are scheduled. Participants should bring their own sample and one slice of a gel (1D gel is preferred, but 2D gels are also possible, advise on the selection criteria will be provided) will be measured using splittless nano-HPLC Orbitrap FTMS.
In view of the limited number of participants (max 16), PhD students and postdocs applying will be selected. Each participant should therefore indicate in a half page A4 the background of her/his project.

  • Programme topics:
  • • introduction to mass spectrometry
  • • spectral interpretation
  • • 1D and 2D gel electrophoresis
  • • digestion of samples
  • • preparation of samples for FTMS measurements (spot picking, in gel digestion)
  • • introduction to databases
  • • database searching
  • • evaluation using Bioworks,
  • • Mascot and OMSSA
  • • LC-ESI-MS
  • • Quantitative techniques
  • • exercise in data-evaluation of peptide mass
  • • fingerprinting data and of LC-MS data sets
  • • measurements of intact proteins and protein-ligand interaction using MS.
  • • Search for biomarkers using FT-MS
  • • data evaluation of own FT-MS data
  • • biostatistical tools for the exploration and interpretation of proteomics data
  • • nutrition-related changes in tissue and plasma proteomes-insights from 2D gel electrophoresis studies
  • • Presentation by each participant of the results

Course coordinators:
• Jacques Vervoort, Sjef Boeren, Rumyana Karlova - Laboratory of Biochemistry - WU
